Expect Us (Poem)

My last post was originally a Facebook post I typed on my phone while laying in bed, mind racing. It was recieved so well I decided to make it a poem. I’m no poet…. enjoy.

We live in a society that ridicules and insults intelligence,
where cool kids poke fun and mock the smart kids.
Where adults shame those who dare question the boundaries of the world around them
and express their deep seeded desire for understanding the conundrum.

These same people jump on Facebook
to post and text, not knowing that it took
leaps, bounds, imagination, ingenuity, and risks,
from the theory of gravity, to the laws of quantum physics.
The culmination of man’s achievements at their feet,
all so they can bat their eyes, and send that tweet.

Now I’m not saying you need to know quantum physics
to operate a phone or to watch Netflix,
but the attitude we hole at large is deplorable,
regrettable, unfortunate, shameful, dire, and miserable.

But a shift is coming.

A minority brewing with desire and uncapped passion,
scientifically literate and ready for their unmasking,
driven to understand, learn, filled with desire
to keep moving forward, a hunger that won’t expire.

We know what “progression” means, and understand that
if we are to move forward, we cannot look back.
We have to let go old ways, old thinking must break,
for it stagnates progression and we repeat our mistakes.

I can’t tell you when it will happen,
I can only tell you we’re here,
standing strong, poised, and staunch
trust me, it’s near.
Expect to see a push for change,
for discovery and to explore,
the farthest of Horizons from our cosmic shore.

And I promise it’s worth it,
this change is for the best.
It’s most effective from within,
and the wisest can attest.

So if you feel it, you know it,
and want to stand,
we’re here in growing numbers,
with extended hands.
Inhale deep, with spirits elevated,

Its 5 am….. Time to share a thought. (this might get a little long) My coworker, and friend, made a comment tonight about me learning how to juggle. She said soon I’m going to have a long resume of useless things. I laughed, because it was a cute comment, but my brain immediately began firing off a rebuttal and questions geared at attacking the foundation in reasoning that would even bring about a comment like that in the first place. But instead of attacking reasoning (knowing me I’ll end up doing it anyway), I figured I’d just say why I do the things I do.

I have these little “rules” to my life. I try, to the best of my abilities, not to have anything I do NOT coincide with my rules. The first thing, and what’s most important, is my happiness. I’m very hedonistic in nature and almost everything I choose to do makes me happy. I feel that life is wasted if aren’t happy and you gain so much in the journey to it; new knowledge, friendships, experiences, ect.

My second rule is that nothing is trivial. I’m a believer in the “butterfly effect” that the smallest things we do can have major effects on things in the future. The less things appear trivial, the less likely you are to take things for granted.

Another rule to my life is that time and mind are the most precious things you can give a person. There’s no greater gift than teaching someone something new and nothing more valuable than time. You can get more money, you can’t get more time.

Another rule is not to turn down a try. If you do…. There should be a really good reason not too, not just “I can’t right now”, “I’m too busy”, or “well… I don’t know”. If simple excuses keep you from trying things, you’re going to spend a lot of time in the future thinking about what you DIDNT do in the past.

So, for me, juggling is another step towards my own personal happiness. To some it may not seem like much, but I’m pretty sure I’ll get more reward in making my daughter smile while doing it than in telling her it was something I wanted to do as a child but “just didn’t”. Stop making excuses for yourself, do what makes you feel good regardless of what the world may say. I do a lot of things from photography and writing to painting and now juggling. If people say, years from now, “damn, what DIDNT Marcus do?”……. I’ll be pleased with that! That’s fucking awesome.

I just don’t turn down a try… Can you give me a good reason to? Better yet, can you give me a good reason why you have? (ah… see…. I couldn’t help it)

Don’t get caught up in the dream.. You know the house, the car, the job… That good ol’ American dream. There’s more to life than working your entire adult life to get by and leaving behind your inner child. The dream is for people who are asleep anyway.

This is where my militant side arises. Everyone is entitled to their beliefs and I would never infringe upon that right, that’s part of what makes America special, BUT that comes with conditions. One of those conditions, where I draw the line, is when your beliefs put someone else in harms way.

Prayer is “wishful thinking”, at best. No prayer has ever been demonstrated to have been granted. Most times, when an event pans out in someones favor they think the prayer has been answered…… what about amputees? I’m sure many have prayed…. I’ve yet to see a limb just grow back. I know many of you hold tight to your beliefs because there are things you can’t explain (read my blog on the “God of the Gaps Fallacy….yup… shameless plug) but that doesn’t mean it’s ok to just extend those beliefs beyond you to others. It’s called PERSONAL for a specific reason. Prayer is a way for people to FEEL like they’ve done something, without actually DOING ANYTHING. From public acts of terrorism to natural disaster, you always hear “send prayers”… HOW ABOUT…. send food, money, medical supplies, ect…. you can hope and pray all you want after you put forth actual effort.

With that being said, this couple has killed their second child because of their religious beliefs. If your religious beliefs cause harm to others, oppresses, or impedes the rights of others, you have a faulty belief system and you really need to check it.

The sad part about what’s taught in religion isn’t just the content, it’s that it should never be questioned. Children are taught this and they grow up to be adults that don’t question anything. Questioning information and authority is the FIRST STEP to breaking ignorance. You wonder why certain forms of hate and ignorance will always persist?… look at what we tell our children. OBEY, JUST LISTEN, DON’T QUESTION ME!! They grow up to be drones…. The world needs drones, I suppose.

Back to these two….. how about….. and it may sound cruel, but it’s no crueler than what they did…. we inject them with the same bacteria their child died from. Let them try to “pray it away” and put their beliefs to the test. If they seek any medical attention, arrest them and lock them up. PERIOD. That only proves they’re full of shit and that they deserve everything coming to them.

Universe Within

What’s more beautiful, inspiring, and significant than knowing just how much of the universe is in you?

I have friends, like myself, who are libertarian and take what we feel are the best parts of liberal and conservative thinking and mix it in with our own reasoning and ideologies. I tend to lean more liberal on social issues, especially in regards to equality, and I tend to lean more conservative on financial issues. Keywords in the last sentence being TEND and LEAN. With each issue I view, I gather as much information on what I don’t know, then I use my own understanding and reasoning for potential answers. I eventually I see where it lies, in regards to political ideology, but that’s not what’s important to me. I don’t just start out with the ideology of my affiliation…. that’s not good at all and it’s where most of the fuss begins.

I also have friends that are hardcore conservatives and others who are hardcore liberals. I view their posts on facebook all the time and I just don’t know what to make of it. In my opinion, I see more conservative postings as personal attacks on specific people, especially the president, downright MUDSLINGING, and in defense of certain rights, the popular one right now being the second amendment. Also, they run into conspiracy a lot too. I think they a lot of people put WAY too much confidence and trust in the government to efficiently pull off some of the things they are claimed to have done, especially without the evidence. Liberal posts used to be more personal, because I guess it was just “cool” to make bush look like a clown. Now it’s more, “let’s remind them who their last leader was” and small attacks on the conservative ideology itself, which I happen to like. Don’t attack people, attack ways of thinking.

I have mixed feelings about it all. Sometimes, I’m angered by the postings, other times I laugh, and sometimes I’m just puzzled at how people can think this way. In the end, I’m upset, more than anything else, at the polarization of people in America.

No matter WHO gets elected in office, you have half of America praising and defending the president, almost blindly, and the other half of America preparing slanderous postings and shouting “He’s not my president”. That’s what pisses me off. I sometimes think I put too much confidence in the American psyche, but doesn’t it say something about the American political complex that this happens EVERY TIME there’s a change in office!? Politics isn’t a fucking sport, but we treat it like teams. Look at the commercials, the conventions, the colors, the fans…. I mean…. yea, the FANS, because that’s what they act like.

I understand that there are no simple ways to solving social and economic issues. (example- to clear some debt, would you raise taxes or shut down a few public services to save money?) To suggest that the middle ground is the best way to go isn’t always a safe bet either. But, what I see most is that as soon as one side begins to speak, the other side shoves their fingers in their ears and yells “la la la la!”

That always gets me…. and I don’t get it. No one listens. Everyone would rather preserve the shifty integrity of their party and scapegoat problems to shed responsibility, rather than buck up, hold hands, and take on issues, balls out, like you think Americans would. This isn’t my America or your America, this is OUR America. Once we all fully understand and get past that last statement, it will transpire to our issues, and then to our goals.

Lastly, to throw my own little conspiracy into the mix- Big business and corporations have been in the back pockets of government for DECADES now. Not only do business run government, via lobbying and sponsorship, they play BOTH sides. They play the game well. In the end, nothing matters to business, except the bottom line.

The Logical Fallacy

I’ve debated many people and many subjects over the years from theology to politics to cheesecake being a pie. I’ve been hammered and I’ve totally demolished people. I see my improvements as time passes and I want to share a little known secret that would help you not only in debates, but in discussions about ANYTHING.

The good ol’ LOGICAL FALLACY!!!

Logical fallacies are flaws in logic and reasoning. It’s a trick that the mind plays on itself try to validate or escape what it doesn’t understand. Pay attention to the media and politicians, especially. They use fallacies all the time when answering questions and relaying info to the public. We use these “illusions” on the day to day basis and most of us don’t even know it. So, here’s a few to help you better see through bullshit when it’s in front of you.

Starting with my favorite and easiest one to catch, the AD HOMINEM. The ad hominem fallacy is where someone attacks a person’s character and not the point being made in order to undermine the person’s argument. This one is extremely common and used especially by politicians. How many times have you heard someone make a point, and then someone else saying not to trust them because they are “this or that”?

Next one to easily spot is the BANDWAGON FALLACY. The bandwagon fallacy is when someone tries to use what the majority does in order to validate their claim. Just because the majority feel one way about something, doesn’t make it right and certainly is no way to rationalize something. 200 years ago, the majority felt that blacks shouldn’t be free men and women and someone of that time would easily argue that that is “just how it goes” and “it’s how we are brought up”, that is no reason for validation.

Next up, the STRAWMAN FALLACY. The strawman fallacy is where someone tries to misrepresent another person’s argument to make it easier for them to attack. I laugh when I see politicians do this one. They oversimplify and skew the opponents argument, but then they present an oversimplified and vague rebuttal….. AND PEOPLE EAT IT UP….

PERSONAL INCREDULITY!! This one is very VERY sneaky and often doesn’t present itself straight forward. This fallacy happens when someone finds another person’s argument too complicated or difficult to understand and, because of that, claims that the point is invalid. I see this most often with CREATIONIST… LOL!! Most people never just say that they don’t understand something, and even when you catch it, they still don’t admit it.

A very common fallacy, especially in theological discussion, is the BURDEN OF PROOF. This happens when someone tries to say that the person disproving a claim has to provide proof. WRONG, the person making the claim has to provide proof of the claim. If I say I have tiger in my living room, you can argue and say that I don’t. I would to prove my claim. I CANNOT say that you have to prove that I don’t. That makes no sense, but its often used as a tactic for theistic discussion.

That was a few of my favorites and most common fallacies…. now to briefly go through a few more.

SPECIAL PLEADING is when exceptions are made when a claim is shown to be invalid. For me, I see this most in theological discussion when I show the inconsistencies in biblical text. Most times, texts are dismissed.

APPEAL TO EMOTION FALLACY is when someone uses an emotional response in place of a valid point. Watch how many times a politician uses a STORY when answering a question.

ANECDOTAL FALLACY is when someone uses a personal experience or an isolated example to make a point, usually to dismiss or skew statistics. Just because something happened to you or someone you know, doesn’t mean its typical or a valid reason to back a statement. It’s crazy how much this is accepted in law. Anecdotal evidence are claims of truth based off personal experience. As much as something may have been true, its never accepted in science as actual evidence for anything.

SO, now that I’ve given you these great mental tools, apply them as much as you can. You’ll really see how easily people fool each other and themselves.

People like me; humanist, secularist, and freethinkers, have been saying this for a long time now. My faith in humanity is constantly wavering and I do question whether my cynicism is the result of my knowledge and intelligence. Given the amount of progress I’ve seen and read about around the world, I still wonder if we’re too deep into the chaos, with little chance to dig ourselves out. I suppose that only time will tell, but until then, people like me will keep doing what we do. Not only do we want to see the world learn, but to unite. It’s about time we woke up.

Stop hitting the snooze button.

Charlie’s speech-

I’m sorry, but I don’t want to be an Emperor, that’s not my business. I don’t want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone if possible, Jew, gentile, black man, white. We all want to help one another, human beings are like that. We all want to live by each other’s happiness, not by each other’s misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone and the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone.

The way of life can be free and beautiful. But we have lost the way.

Greed has poisoned men’s souls, has barricaded the world with hate; has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed.

We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in;
machinery that gives abundance has left us in want.
Our knowledge has made us cynical,
our cleverness hard and unkind.
We think too much and feel too little.
More than machinery we need humanity,
more than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness.

Without these qualities life will be violent and all will be lost.

The airplane and the radio have brought us closer together. The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men, cries out for universal brotherhood for the unity of us all. Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world, millions of despairing men, women and little children, victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people. To those who can hear me I say: do not despair.

The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed, the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass and dictators will die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people and so long as men die liberty will never perish.

Soldiers: don’t give yourselves to brutes, men who despise you and enslave you, who regiment your lives, tell you what to do, what to think and what to feel, who drill you, diet you, treat you as cattle, as cannon fodder!

Don’t give yourselves to these unnatural men,
machine men, with machine minds and machine hearts.
You are not machines!
You are not cattle!
You are men!!
You have the love of humanity in your hearts.
You don’t hate, only the unloved hate.
The unloved and the unnatural.
Soldiers: don’t fight for slavery, fight for liberty!

In the seventeenth chapter of Saint Luke it is written:
– “The kingdom of God is within man.”
Not one man, nor a group of men, but in all men: in you!

You the people have the power, the power to create machines, the power to create happiness. You the people have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure.

Then, in the name of democracy, let us use that power, let us all unite!
Let us fight for a new world, a decent world that will give men a chance to work, that will give you the future and old age and security.

By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power, but they lie. They do not fulfill their promise, they never will. Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people.

Now let us fight to fulfill that promise. Let us fight to free the world, to do away with national barriers, to do away with greed, with hate and intolerance. Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men’s happiness.

Soldiers! In the name of democracy: let us all unite!
