A lot of my more intelligent, scientifically literate friends know how much I love astrophysics, astronomy, and related fields, like quantum mechanics. Some time ago I made a video, late at night after I had been burned by the sun from being out all day, about a thought I had in my head. It had to do with the expansion of the universe, dark energy, and it’s ties in theoretical physics.

A couple days ago I was looking through my video manager on youtube and came across that video. I watched it and pulled it immediately from the “Public” section. I didn’t realize just how jumbled my thoughts were and how I didn’t give too much detail in facts and reasoning. I poorly communicated the information because I didn’t write it down. I just hit the “record” button and went at it! So I decided that I wanted to remake the video fully explaining, in far better detail, my theory and view of things. I even drew up a couple slides to show just what I was going to explain. I don’t know if I thought that maybe I could have been one of the first people to pitch the idea, but it’s been in my mind for a while and I had to share.

The ONE thing I didn’t do was research what I was thinking. I googled the topic, just to look up a little more info on the subject matter and came right across what I had been thinking this entire time. I had mixed feelings about it too. At first I was upset… “FUCK!!”, I couldn’t believe it was already proposed. Like someone read my mind. I took a step back, thought a bit… and…. smiled.

Now… I feel a bit proud of myself. I came to a logical conclusion with verifiable, testable information about the cosmos; totally unassisted. Now, it may only be a theory, but I put this together in my head and played with it only to find that others drew the same conclusions and thought the same thing. I’m not alone in this… I feel really good about that.

You know what grinds my gears?…. When people post a facebook status claiming science bears no truth and it’s just a theory. Believe me, I’ve tried many many times to explain what a “theory” is in science. It gets no traction with most. If people understood how badly they misunderstand the word… well… it wouldn’t stop people, lol, but it definitely would knock the numbers down.

So now I skip the clarification of words and go for the jugular. I don’t have the patience with most to carry these conversations like I used to, particularly because people that usually make that claim base their logic with faith (which is the biggest dis-qualifier to rational discussion) and, to be blunt… they are uneducated. Some people just need a good dose of logic and hopefully it will excite them to begin looking more into the natural world. That’s idealistic of me, because usually it just offends them.

So think about this for a second-

That status you just wrote reconfirmed MANY observations, laws, and theories in science. From electricity powering the devices and the fiber optic cables that transfer information all over the planet,  to the satellite knowing your location at the time of the status all reconfirms theories and laws established. You reconfirmed electrical theory the second you turned on your phone. You reconfirmed gravitational theory when the satellite had to adjust it’s calculations, because of the Earth’s gravitational well weakening as you get away from it’s center, so it wouldn’t think you’re in the Atlantic Ocean. And the fact that you post time and time again means you TRUST THE CONSISTENCY OF THE NATURAL WORLD. If voltage changed every time we applied it to a device, and thus frying it, we wouldn’t use either electricity or devices.

That’s all we do in science, we observe phenomena in the natural world, and build the best answer to WHY it happens consistently.

Why not take the time to look up and educate yourself on what happens in the world and why. Everything we do from driving our cars to taking medicine is the result of scientific theory. Expanding the understanding of the world you live in is an amazingly beautiful thing. You have free access to tons of information at public libraries and having a smartphone means you have access to an even bigger database of knowledge. Just ask someone to explain how things work. I understand you have to be both willing and able to open up your mind. And if you genuinely don’t possess the ability, this isn’t geared toward you… but most of you do… and it’s WILLFUL IGNORANCE that grinds my gears.
