Universe Within

What’s more beautiful, inspiring, and significant than knowing just how much of the universe is in you?

One mile is 5,280 feet. For most people, it would take 2,112 steps for you to go that far. If you walked around the world on the equator, it would take 52,592,073 steps. The Earth is 24,901.55 miles across. That’s a pretty big distance… But let’s look beyond our world.

The sun is  91,402,641 miles from the Earth. Walking that would be 193,042,377,800 (billion) steps, roughly. Let’s just stick to miles to keep this relative for now. Our furthest planet is Neptune, a beautiful blue gas planet. The distance from the sun to Neptune is 2,798,310,156 miles away (billion). To get to our furthest object, Pluto, a dwarf planet, it would take another 871,741,908 miles! So the diameter of the solar system is roughly 7,340,104,129 miles!

When numbers really get this big and bigger, we use other forms of measurement like AU, astronomical units, and light-years, but I’m going to stick with miles to really show perspective. Just for giggles, it would take over 8,000,000,000,000 (trillion) steps to walk out of the solar system, assuming every step you take is 2.5 feet.

We live on a planet that’s part of a planetary system, that’s grouped together with other planetary systems, stars, rocks, dust, and cool stuff to create a galaxy. Our galaxy is called the Milky Way, and it’s HUGE! Our galaxy contains from about 200 to 400 BILLION planets and stars. Just think about the distance that lies between the planets and sun in our own system and blow it up a couple million times. There’s a lot of space between bodies and a lot of space to be covered. Buckle up!

The center of our galaxy contains a super massive black hole. It exerts a huge amount of gravity and it’s one of the things that keeps the galaxy together. To distance from us to the center of our galaxy is about… get ready…. over 180,000,000,000,000,000 (quadrillion) miles. But that’s just a mere spec in the universe.

Our galaxy is a part of a big cluster of galaxies, called the local group. It contains over 50 galaxies. Each galaxy has billions of planets and stars within it. Our local group is estimated to be about 58,784,998,100,000,000,000 (quintillion) miles wide. Now we’re really taking off…..
